One of the characters portrayed by Roy is Sir Nicholas Carew, the Royal Champion of Henry VIII in the year 1533. Researching this historical figure was envigorating and rewarding for Roy. Look for Sir Nicholas' shield on the field of valor, 3 black lions on a gold field.
Roy also portrays Otto von Nurenberg, Sir Henry Lee and Earl William Westmoreland.
Roy's personal motto is DOCENDO DISCE (learn by teaching).
Kate joined the Free Lancers in 1990. When she first signed on, her duties included grooming, assisting in
horse training, squire to the list and the keeper of the muck fork. As she stood on the sidelines and watched many young men train to be jousters she began to realize she had what it takes to joust.
With encouragement she began her training and soon received her custom made suite of armour as a gift from her supportive husband. She began jousting in 1991 and has advanced to director and trainer with an opportunity to joust here and there. You may have seen her joust at the Florida Renaissance Festival, Scarborough Faire, the Ontario and Maryland Renaissance Festivals.
Some of Kate's other credits include music videos such as the Moody Blues' Nights in White Satin, Paul Revere and the Raiders' Just Like Me and the occasional commercial. She has been featured on The Phil Donahue Show with a national fashion show of her chain mail designs.
Backstage you will find Kate in the role of Chief Caretaker over the many horses required by the Free Lancers. These big babies (the horses) have taken a backseat in her life with the arrival of her daughter Lucrecia Bella Luna Cox.
Do not misunderstand, her husband, Roy, is equally as important and Kate delights in the opportunity to work along side her Knight in shining armour, and he with her. How many ladies can claim that?
Ripper Moore raised himself on a steady diet of sword and sorcery,
fantasy, and medieval combat, voraciously reading every book he could find on the topic and attacking his friends with sticks at every opportunity. As he grew, he studied fencing and kendo, joined and founded medieval combat organizations and in general found new and more sophisticated ways to attack his friends with sticks at every opportunity.
Then at a small Renaissance faire in Alabama, he heard the true ring of steel on steel and said, "Yeah! Stage combat!"
The next few years he filled with flashing steel, theatrical swashbuckling and occasionally dying a gruesome death for the passing amusement
of his betters. Finally his travels brought him to the redoubtable Roy, who put him on top of a large horse and said, "Now try this." After training constantly for 7 months with the Free Lancers
and the A.A.S.S.C.C., Ripper was ready to hit the Renaissance circuit full-time, and has remained there ever since, a real crowd-pleaser!
Knights eagerly line up to meet him on the field of combat. Jealousy, perhaps? Ripper portrays Sir George Clifford, the Queen's Champion (the Queen, of course, is Elizabeth I) or Baron Alexander DeCourtenay. Look for Ripper on the field of honor in blue and gold as Sir George or in black and green as Alexander. Ripper was the the 2003 and 2004 WCJA World Jousting Champion.
Ripper's motto is DUM SPIRITUS DURAT (While Breath Remains).
In the time flux of Renaissance faires his fantasy came true. Bill obtained a costume and began his historical hit-or-miss experience in the world of living history. With his love of horses, the ideals of the Boy Scouts, 8 years of military training and 15 years of fantasy role-playing, Bill was drawn to the joust. The Free Lancers put him to the test. After showing some promise as a squire, the Free Lancers offered to train him as a knight. So Bill packed up his gear and moved to the C.C.C. training site for the ardous task of basic training. He rounded out his abilities through training in the various styles of classical fighting offered by the American Academy of Stage and Screen Combat Choreographers and is now an Instructor.
Bill plays the part of
Rogan Lors, the acknowledged illegitimate son of an English knight.
Landless and raised across the English Channel, Rogan is currently participating in the English Tourney Circuit in order to prove his worth as a knight in an attempt to win fame and fortune.
Rogan's only words of warning are Be Prepared.
No one knows Barchan's real name and that's the way he like it. He hails from the Baltimore area and has seen action on the tilt yards of Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, Texas and Canada.
He and his good friend Briavael have amazed spectators with their show Appaloosas Can't Jump which has Bri' jumping a horse through Barchan's spread legs while he helplessly stands on his head. Barchan's motto used to be, naturally, Please Jump High. Nowadays it is Ouch!.
